RAJAR: BBC Asian Network firm at No.1; Sunrise Radio increases nationally

The BBC Asian Network consolidated its position as the UK’s No.1 Asian radio station, with an increase of 61,000 listeners, according to RAJAR data for Q2/23.

The BBC Asian Network delivered a reach of 505,000 – up from 444,000 in Q1/23, Its listening hours were also up from 6.0 to 6.6.

Its commercial rival, Sunrise Radio was also up from 327,000 in Q1/23 to 351,000 in Q2/23. Its listening hours increased from 4.5 to 4.8.

Tony Lit, MBE, MD Sunrise Radio comments, “After the release of Rajar Q2 2023 this morning, Sunrise Radio now in its 34th year of broadcasting is once again confirmed as the UK’s Number 1 commercial Asian radio station, both Nationally and in London. I’m also happy to report that on Sunrise National we have increased our weekly audience by 24,000 individual listeners and our total weekly hours are up by 212,000. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal listeners and my team for their support and messages of condolence after the sad loss of Dr Avtar Lit, my father and the founder of Sunrise Radio.

Head of BBC Asian Network, Ahmed Hussain said: “This quarter’s RAJAR increase is a testament to the team and their continuous drive for the network to remain the biggest and best Asian radio station in the UK. With an increase of 13.7% on last quarter and a 6.8% increase on last year, the network welcomes 510,000 listeners week on week. The successful launch of our brand new Tik-Tok account sees our audience across all social platforms now sitting at 2.4 million demonstrating the importance of our presence within the younger generation.”

In Greater London, Sunrise Radio was down by 10,000 from 169,000 to 159,000. Lyca Radio and Panjab Radio were on par with 113,000, while Lyca Gold was at 71,000. See full data here.
