Bollywood films’ evergreen love affair with chiffon sarees

Any dreamy romantic Bollywood number is complete only when the leading lady sizzles in a chiffon saree.

These sarees have been identified as bringing a great amount of sensuousness and oomph to women on the silver screen.

Some of the best Hindi love songs have heroines draped in the six yards while frolicking in rains, swaying in beautiful gardens, dancing around green landscapes, and singing on snow-clad mountains among other picturesque locations.

Who can forget the gorgeous Sridevi Boney Kapoor allure Anil Kapoor in an eye-catching blue chiffon saree dancing enticingly on “Kate Nahin Kat” from the 1987 release ‘Mr. India’. The vivacious actor has been credited with introducing the iconic fabric as a symbol of romance in Hindi cinema. Heroines earlier to her had appeared in chiffon sarees but the bewitching star gave them a new identity.

Juhi Chawla looked breath-taking wearing a cream colour chiffon saree in the song “Lagi Aaj Sawan” from the 1989 movie ‘Chandni’ that had Vinod Khanna singing an ode to her.

The 1993 film ‘Baazigar’ showcased the bold number “Ae Mere Humsafar”, where Shilpa Shetty donned a yellow chiffon saree and had everyone captivated with her tempting moves including the hero Shah Rukh Khan.

The original “Tip Tip Barsa Paani” song from the 1994 action thriller ‘Mohra’ saw the fetching Raveena Tandon raising the temperature in a yellow chiffon saree as she tried to woo Akshay Kumar.

“Humko Humise Chura Lo” featured the stunning Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wearing many charming outfits, one of which was a pink and white Chiffon saree as she romanced Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Mohabbatein’ during the year 2000.

The pretty Kajol Devgan rocked different coloured chiffon sarees in “Suraj Hua Maddham”, from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ that hit theatres in 2001 with Shah Rukh Khan as the male lead.

Daisy Shah effortlessly stole hearts in red, blue, yellow, mint blue, pink and white chiffon sarees that she wore in the love song “Tere Naina Maar Hi Daalenge” from the 2014 film ‘Jai Ho’ also starring Salman Khan.

“Gerua”, the romantic number from the 2015 movie ‘Dilwale’ showed Kajol Devgan mesmerising Shah Rukh Khan yet again, looking like a million bucks in yellow and saffron colour chiffon sarees that she got styled in along with other dresses.

Alia Bhatt is the latest heroine who can be seen flaunting pastel and dark colour chiffon sarees in the melodious song “Tum Kya Mile” from the upcoming 2023 film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ starring Ranveer Singh opposite her.

The petite actor has been receiving mixed reactions ever since the song came out for her choice of wearing chiffon sarees in cold weather trying to emulate a Yash Chopra heroine. Dharma heroines too have worn the sensational garment but the legendary director Yash Chopra is hailed to have made chiffon sarees a quintessential part of romantic songs in his films.

However, Bhatt has got the audience nostalgic, as people are going down memory lane remembering female actors and their various appearances in chiffon sarees in romantic songs. Chiffon sarees have left an everlasting impression in the minds of Hindi cinema viewers – the floaty silhouette conveys emotions of love and passion through clothing which has been viewed as a piece of art here.
